RIP Nobuhiko Obayashi: Director of J-Horror Classic HAUSU Has Passed Away

It’s been a sad week. Today, Dread Central has learned that Nobuhiko Obayashi has passed away after a battle with lung cancer; the filmmaker was 82 years old. Obayashi directed the J-Horror classic House (aka Hausu), released in 1977. A consummate producer of lauded cinema, his most recent film Labyrinth Of Cinema was slated to be released in Japan this weekend, but canceled due to the Coronavirus outbreak.

Synopsis:
In an effort to avoid spending time with her father and his creepy new lover, young Gorgeous (Kimiko Ikegami) resolves to visit her aunt’s remote mansion. With six of her closest friends in tow, including the musically inclined Melody (Eriko Tanaka) and the geeky Prof (Ai Matsubara), Gorgeous arrives at the estate, where supernatural events occur almost immediately. A severed head takes flight, household appliances come to life and a portrait of a cat seems to contain an evil spirit.

All of us here at Dread Central send our sincerest condolences to Obayashi’s fans, friends, and family. His unique visions set him apart from the masses and his driving spirit will be missed.
