What We Do in the Shadows and Thor: Ragnarok director Taika Waititi seems to be attached to a new project every single day. And I guess today is no different as now we have word that the JoJo Rabbit filmmaker will be teaming with Jude Law (Existenz) to bring us an adaptation of Rick Spears, James Callahan, and Luigi Anderson’s graphic novel The Auteur.
The Auteur is described as a gonzo horror-comedy, a twisted romance and a glamorous, high wire act of biting satire.
It centers on producer Nathan T. Rex who enters a downward spiral of drugs and depravity in a quest to resurrect his career and save his soul after producing the biggest bomb in Hollywood history. Over budget and behind schedule on PRESIDENTS DAY, he is backed into a corner by bad publicity, a crap project, and studio politics. But enlisting serial-killer-turned-murder-consultant Darwin, his trusty assistant Igor, narcotics from Doctor Love, and the lovely actress Coconut, T. Rex will stop at nothing in his quest for cinematic fame and glory. God help us all.
Sounds like fun to me!
Showtime’s EVP Amy Israel tells Deadline: “The Auteur unites the wildly imaginative filmmaker Taika Waititi and the barbed wit of Peter Warren with the undeniable Jude Law in a bloody love letter to the movies that will make you simultaneously die laughing and want to run for your life.”
Showtime has ordered multiple scripts for the half-hour horror-comedy series to be written by Waititi and Peter Warren (Ghost Team). Showtime will produce the series along with Legendary. Endeavor Content serves as the studio. Waititi will direct the pilot episode and executive produce along with Law, Spears, Callahan, Warren, Eric Gitter, and Dan Halsted.
