This Day in Horror: Happy Birthday Barbara Hershey

Born on this day in 1948: actress Barbara Hershey

An award-winning actress whose first acting job was a recurring role on the TV series Gidget, Hershey has had a varied career. Though she appeared in a Roger Corman-produced exploitation film called Boxcar Bertha in 1972, her first genre film was 1982’s The Entity, in which she plays a single mother who is raped and abused by an unseen entity.

Hershey played the mother of a young man who is haunted by death in Riding the Bullet; she played an overprotective stage mother in Black Swan; she played Patrick Wilson’s mother – who is having strange visions – in the Insidious franchise. On TV, she had a regular role on A&E’s Damien, a follow-up to The Omen, in which Hershey played a powerful woman who spent her life protecting young Damien, and as an adult, wants him to embrace his antichrist-ness. She also had a recurring role in the final season of The X-Files, in which she played Erika Price, one of the leaders of the new Syndicate.
