Paul Reubens Pitching Super-Dark PEE-WEE HERMAN Reboot

Well, it looks like Pee-Wee Herman himself Paul Reubens wants to bring back his iconic character once again. But this time he wants to do a super-dark reboot, The Pee-Wee Herman Story.

And it sounds pretty insane.

THR reports Reubens has been aggressively shopping a script around that takes the character into dark and unexpected territory like being sent to a mental hospital for shock treatment for his severe pill and alcohol addiction. Yikes.

It’s a script that Reubens completed in the late 90s, and he says, dead serious: “I’ve referred to it as the Valley of the Dolls Pee-wee movie. It’s about fame.” Again. Yikes.

It centers on Pee-wee emerging from prison to become an unlikely yodeling star (yeah, you read that right), moving to Hollywood, becoming a movie star; and developing a severe pill and alcohol addiction that turns him into a monster.

Reubens has evidently approached Uncut Gems filmmakers The Safdie Brothers to helm the new $15 million movie. Will it actually happen? Reubens seems hopeful, saying: “I do feel like it’s going to probably happen, I have a couple of people that are interested. But this is Hollywood. A couple of people interested and five bucks will get you five bucks.”
