This Day in Horror: Happy Birthday Rutger Hauer

Born on this day in 1944: actor Rutger Hauer

Dutch actor Rutger Hauer was born during the German occupation of the Netherlands during WWII. He attributed this to his feelings of pacifism. Despite this, he often was hired to play “bad guys” in film and television.

Of his 200 credits, some of his most notable genre roles included: antihero replicant Roy Batty in Blade Runner; creepy, homicidal hitchhiker John Ryder in The Hitcher; head honcho vampire Lothos in Buffy the Vampire Slayer; evil Cardinal Roark in Sin City; Dracula in Dracula III: Legacy; eponymous Hobo in Hobo With a Shotgun; and a mysterious, cannibalistic patriarch in Channel Zero: Butcher’s Block. He played a few heroic roles in genre projects as well, like a fairy in True Blood and Van Helsing in Dracula 3D.

Hauer died in July 2019 of an unspecified illness.
