Box-Office: UNDERWATER Opens in 7th Place With $7M

Director William Eubank’s aquatic horror flick Underwater starring Kristen Stewart hit theaters this past weekend. And today we learned from The Numbers that the film ironically landed with a seventh-place finish and $7M.

More ironic still is that the film’s tagline was – wait for it: “7 Miles Below the Ocean Surface Something Has Awakened.” Strange, eh?

The flick currently sports a 53% approval rating over on Rotten Tomatoes with a Critics Consensus that reads: Underwater’s strong cast and stylish direction aren’t enough to distract from the strong sense of déjà vu provoked by this claustrophobic thriller’s derivative story.

Audiences polled by CinemaScore gave the film an average “C” grade.

Underwater centers on a crew of underwater researchers who must scramble to safety from ravenous creatures after an earthquake devastates their subterranean laboratory.

It stars Kristen Stewart as Norah Price, Vincent Cassel as Captain, T.J. Miller as Paul, Jessica Henwick as Emily, John Gallagher Jr., Mamoudou Athie, and Gunner Wright as Lee.

Underwater is directed by William Eubank and produced by Peter Chernin, Tonia Davis, and Jenno Topping from a script by Brian Duffield and Adam Cozad based on a story by Duffield.

Rated PG-13 for sci-fi action and terror, and brief strong language, it is NOW PLAYING.
