This Day in Horror: Happy Birthday Lloyd Kaufman
Born on this day in 1945: Lloyd Kaufman
Kaufman is a legend in the cult genre. Along with friend Michael Herz, they formed Troma Studios in 1974. After a series of low-budget sex comedies and action films, Troma found mainstream success with The Toxic Avenger, which Kaufman directed. Toxie, the hero of the film, became the studio’s mascot. The success of The Toxic Avenger led to multiple sequels, comic books, a cartoon series, and all sorts of merchandise.
Some of Kaufman’s other directorial efforts include Class of Nuke ‘Em High; Sgt. Kabukiman NYPD; Tromeo and Juliet; Terror Firmer; Return to Nuke ‘Em High; and Poultrygeist: Night of the Chicken Dead.
A devout supporter of independent film, Kaufman has over seven hundred credits on his IMDB page. He has held virtually every job in cinema, and often makes cameo appearances in other independent horror films.
