Classic Horror Western THE HAWKLINE MONSTER Snags New Director

The Killing of a Sacred Deer and The Favourite director Yorgos Lanthimos is in negotiations to helm New Regency’s adaptation of Richard Brautigan’s 1974 novel The Hawkline Monster.

The story follows two unlikely hero gunslingers hired by a 15-year-old girl named Magic Child to kill the monster that lives in ice caves under the house of a young woman named Miss Hawkline.

It is described as a unique adventure where there is more going on than meets the eye.

THR reports Lanthimos will also produce with Roy Lee (IT), Andrew Trapani (Winchester), Steven Schneider (Glass and Pet Sematary), Ed Guiney and Andrew Lowe. Ianthe Brautigan and Paul Swensen will executive produce. Natalie Lehmann will oversee for New Regency.

Tim Burton (Beetlejuice) previously tried to adapt the novel with Clint Eastwood and Jack Nicholson. Before that, Being There filmmaker Hal Ashby spent over a decade trying to get the film made with Jack Nicholson and Dustin Hoffman, and later Jeff and Beau Bridges.
