To my fellow entertainment journalists and bloggers, take this advice: Don’t let the ink dry on your “Best Horror Movies of 2019” lists until you’ve seen Rabid, the remake of David Cronenberg’s seminal body horror classic remade by Jen and Sylvia Soska (aka The Twisted Twins). It’s not only the first (and so far only) remake of a Cronenberg movie, it’s a gruesome and engaging romp that will leave moviegoers rapt and devastated.
Rabid arrives in US theaters and VOD today (Friday, December 13th). Peep the synopsis below.
Horribly disfigured after a freak accident, doctors perform a radical medical procedure on an aspiring young fashion designer. But when the bandages come off, the side effects soon cause her to develop an insatiable appetite for human blood.
On Monday, we shared an interview with the incomparable, multi-talented Tristan Risk, who explained what makes Rabid truly Canadian, and promising one of her three roles will lead to sleepless nights for many! Tuesday, we continue our Week of Rabid with an interview with Ted Atherton. Atherton plays Dr. William Burroughs (a nod to the American Beat Poet of the same name–and Cronenberg’s adaptation of Naked Lunch). Wednesday, we talked to Mackenzie Gray about “Schadenfreude” and yesterday, we’ grilled Stephen Huszar who plays soap-opera actor Dominic.

Jen Soska: CM Punk gets fitted with a little “love bite” by Audrey from MASTERSFX after being assaulted by our lamprey -lipped leading lady, Laura Vandervoort.
Jen Soska: This video! A close-up of the outstanding piece specially created by creature artist extraordinaire “Twisty” Troy Jones. This bladder technology was also used in Scanners but has been updated here as a nod to David Cronenberg’s work with Dick Smith.
Jen Soska: Sylvie with legendary stunt coordinator and all-around badass, Lauro “Lash” Chartand, getting ready our femme fatale, Hanneke Talbot, as the rabies virus breaks out in controlled chaos. This lady did her own stage dive. If looks could kill we’d all be dead!
Jen Soska: The beautiful Joel Labelle with a little red on him. A stunt performer and an actor, Joel plays Trent Taylor, who has a little disagreement with his fellow actor. Beautiful bite work by MASTERSFX.
Jen Soska: Close up of the “Nightmare Makeup” on Rose aka Laura Vandervoort. One of the many identities Rose is struggling with through the film. This one represents her “perfect self”, like a supermodel. A perfect aesthetic to cover the darkness that lurks beneath the surface. The “Dark Passenger” we all have within us, but try not to allow out.
Jen Soska: Our constant muse, the wonderful Tristan Risk doing ADR as the nurse, Dana. A triple threat in this film playing three roles, they don’t make em like Risk! She’s a true classic Hollywood starlet and, honestly, the third Soska Sister if there ever was one.
