TIFF 2019: Exclusive RESIN Clip Is A Hypnotic, Surreal Journey Through Life And Death

One of the joys of going to film festivals is the opportunity to see movies from other countries so as to experience, for a couple of hours, a totally different cultural view. If movies are meant to offer us a reprieve from our daily lives, foreign films are a way to journey into the lives of others. Horror has always been open to exploring such worlds, from the J-Horror wave in the late ’90s to the French New Extreme to Spain’s haunting imagination and so much more. Today, we want to take you into a fairy tale phantasmagoria with the Danish film Harpiks, aka Resin.

Director Daniel Borgman states, “The film is full of thematic elements; isolation, warmth, madness, mental health, family, nature, the environment, difference, the ‘other’. And it has a fairytale-like quality to the way it addresses these different themes, hopefully creating more of an impression, rather than anything concrete.”

Above is an exclusive clip from the film, which is making its world premiere at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival in the Contemporary World Cinema category. The film will be screening tonight at 9:00 pm EST at the Scotiabank Theater, so those in Toronto should absolutely put this one high on their list for today’s offerings.

Liv, a precocious thirteen-year-old, lives deep in the forest with her simple-minded father Jens and her obese, bedridden mother Maria. Sheltered from the outside world the family survives on what they can find in nature. Here, even the smallest things have a soul, and the greatest meaning can be found in the journey of an ant into the sap of tree roots. What Liv doesn’t know, is that her parents have a dark secret; they have made the outside world believe that she is dead in an attempt to escape society’s norms and demands. Liv’s curiosity, however, propels her to venture into the world, and suddenly, their reclusive existence is threatened by increasing interference from the outside.

Written by Bo hr. Hansen and directed by Daniel Borgman, Resin stars Vivelill Søgaard Holm, Peter Plaugborg, Sofie Gråbøl, Ghita Nørby, and Amanda Collin.
