Speculation: Could James Wan’s Secret Horror Movie with New Line Be the NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET Reboot?

Yesterday, we shared reports that James Wan has been retained by New Line to direct an untitled horror movie. Though it was revealed that Wan will co-write the screenplay with Ingrid Bisu, plot details are shrouded in secrecy.

Not long after we posted the news, Dread Central reader Winston Sims made an exciting prediction:

“I’m’ gonna say that this will end up being the Nightmare On Elm Street reboot! its been hinted New Line wants a new Freddy film out in either 2020 or 2021.”

This certainly aligns with what we’ve heard as well. Last December, Johnson-McGoldrick told the folks at Gamespot:

“[An Elm Street reboot] still happening. Nothing is percolating just yet. The Conjuring universe is sort of first and foremost on [New Line Cinema’s] horror burner. Everybody wants to see Freddy again I think, so I think it’s inevitable at some point.”

The Conjuring 3 is close to wrapping production, which also bolsters the Nightmare theory. In an effort to avoid franchise fatigue, this could be the perfect time for New Line to finally pull the trigger on their ace in the hole.

James Wan certainly has the pedigree and proven track record to helm a proper Elm Street reboot–and we’re even betting that Robert Englund has the stamina and gumption to don the green and red sweater one last time.

We can’t stress enough that this is only a speculation. On the other hand, how fucking cool would it be to see the architect of the Saw and Conjuring franchises take a stab at Elm Street? That’s a film I’d be excited to say.

What do you guys think? Do you agree that Wan would deliver a knock-out rendition of A Nightmare on Elm Street? Let us know in the comments below or on Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram! You can also carry on the convo with me personally on Twitter @josh_millican.
