Producer of Jordan Peele’s CANDYMAN Remake Says Film Will Fit In with US and GET OUT

While gamers are immersed in what happening at E3 in Los Angeles, horror filmmakers are attending The Producers Guild of America’s Produced By Convention. Our associate Jon Schnitzer, co-owner of The Brain Factory, was on hand this morning at the New Age of Producing Horror panel, during which MonkeyPaw producer Ian Cooper dished on Jordan Peele’s upcoming Candyman remake.

We reported yesterday that the rebooted Candyman (being directed by Nia DaCosta) will address toxic fandom. Today, Cooper elaborated while also revealing thematic connections to Peele’s previous films.

When asked if Tony Todd was going to be in the new Candyman he said he had “no comment on that”, but that his issue with fandom is that, “it can be about dogma and resistant to change. Candyman will be mischievous in how we direct the relationship to the other film. It will be satisfying on its own and will dovetail to the original. The new Candyman will fit in with Us and Get Out in a way that’s circuitous.”

That last word is means “in a roundabout way”.

For context, Schnitzer states: “Ian is a huge fan of horror and grew up watching horror films as a teenager with Jordan Peele and said that Jordan has been talking about making a new Candyman for 20 years.”

Peele is penning for the Candyman reboot. OG Candyman Tony Todd will (hopefully) join previously confirmed cast members Yahya Abdul-Mateen II and Teyonah Parris. Look for the new Candyman to materialize on June 12th, 2020.
