Why’s Everyone Hating on HELLBOY So Hard?

Critics got an advanced look at Hellboy early last week, and the responses were almost universally abysmal. At the time of this posting, the film currently holds a pitiable 15% freshness rating on Rotten Tomatoes but, at one point, held an embarrassing 9%. Now that the film has been released nationwide, it seems like fans are just as disappointed as the critics.

So why is everybody hating on Hellboy so far? Is it a protest (perhaps subconsciously) or a display of solidarity with Guillermo del Toro, who was divorced from the Hellboy franchise after delivering two incredible films? Is it that fact that we were promised a hard R horror movie when what we actually got was the softest, most cartoonish R in cinematic history?
