Doug Jones Has No Beef with Mike Mignola or the New HELLBOY Movie

When it was first announced that Guillermo del Toro was no longer affiliated with the Hellboy franchise and that the reigns were being passed to Neil Marshall, Ron Perlman stood in solidarity with the director. Much was made of Perlman’s sore feelings and unhappiness with the studio’s decision to take the franchise in a new direction.
Another former Hellboy actor who was pulled into the fray was Doug Jones, also a frequent collaborator of del Toro who played the amphibious Abe Sapien. But whereas Perlman didn’t mince words, Jones feels like his comments were taken out of context. The truth is, he never had a problem with the shakeup and he feels some publications fabricated his ire.
Here’s what he told the folks at IndieWire recently:
“The Hollywood Reporter article I think was written with a bit of a slant to it,” Jones said. “I think the headline says, ‘Doug Jones says no thanks to the new Hellboy,’ right? And that sounded evil. That sounded to me like me going, ‘No thanks, don’t want your stupid movie.’ Not even close. I’m still very good friends with Mike Mignola, the creator of the ‘Hellboy’ franchise, the ‘Hellboy’ comic books, and he was very involved with this new movie.”
Moreover, Jones considers Hellboy creator Mike Mignola a personal friend, and revealed that he was actually offered a cameo in Neil Marshall’s Hellboy, hitting US Theaters on April 12th.
“I had injured my shoulder, which I didn’t really talk about out loud that much,” Jones said. “And, it was a very physical role that I would not be healed enough to do by the time that rolled up. So, so between ‘Star Trek’ and my shoulder it was just, I couldn’t do it. But then the articles were written with a slant of like oh he’s probably just being nice because he’s so loyal to Guillermo del Toro and they’re not making a ‘Hellboy 3.’ It was that narrative that was put into it and I did not ever say any of that.”
Jones concluded his interview with IndieWire by saying he was “absolutely” planning to see the new Hellboy movie and wishes everyone involved tremendous success.
