Must Watch: studioADI’s PLAYTIME is Part CHILD’S PLAY Parody & Part Commentary on Practical FX vs CGI

studioADI is the legendary company behind many of horror’s greatest feats of practical filmmaking, having designed and produced legions of Xenomorphs and Predators (in addition to numerous other ghastly baddies). Founder Alec Gillis and his team now exist in a world where practical special effects often take a back seat to CGI. This change in the cinematic landscape provided the inspiration for their short film, Playtime.

Part Child’s Play parody, part commentary on practical FX vs CGI, Playtime tells the tale of Billy, a Chucky-esque devil doll with his own catchphrase: “It’s playtime!” In Playtime, however, Billy isn’t a piece of animatronic technology, he’s a real actor. And, like studioADI, Billy is attempting to navigate in a world where CGI is king.
