UPGRADE Director in Discussions to Write ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK Remake

Leigh Whannell and James Wan are co-architects of the Saw and Insidious franchises, but Wan also has an extensive “solo” career, most recently helming the DC blockbuster Aquaman. For his part, Whannell has been less prolific on his own, but last year’s Upgrade was one of 2018’s best. We just reported that Whannell is attached to direct a remake of The Invisible Man for Universal and, today, we’re hearing that he’s also in negotiations to write the remake of John Carpenter’s Escape from New York!

THR broke the news with an exclusive, and the biggest question most horror fan have is, will Whannell also direct?

Whannell will write the script for the remake of the John Carpenter 1980s classic. Sources say that while there is no deal for him to direct, the door is open for that possibility.

We’ll keep you posted as details emerge, so stay tuned! In the meantime, check out the synopsis and trailer for Carpenter’s Escape from New York below.

Synopsis:
In 1997, a major war between the United States and the Soviet Union is concluding, and the entire island of Manhattan has been converted into a giant maximum-security prison. When Air Force One is hijacked and crashes into the island, the president (Donald Pleasence) is taken hostage by a group of inmates. Snake Plissken (Kurt Russell), a former Special Forces soldier turned criminal, is recruited to retrieve the president in exchange for his own freedom.
