Dario Argento Not a Fan of 2018’s SUSPIRIA

One thing that must be said about Luca Guadagnino’s 2018 remake of Suspiria is that the filmmaker made the story his own: Guadagnino changed the setting, almost doubled the run time, and introduced new characters/themes/subtexts. But did he retain the spirit of 1977’s Suspiria, written and directed by master of giallo Dario Argento? According to the original filmmaker: No.

Argento made his feelings known during an interview with the folks at The Film Stage:

“It did not excite me, it betrayed the spirit of the original film: there is no fear, there is no music. The film has not satisfied me so much.”

Argento added, however, that he considers Guadagnino’s Suspiria a refined film and lauded the filmmaker for his talents.

If you’ve never seen 2018’s Suspiria, it made many Top 10 Horror Movies of 2018 lists and has tons of prominent supporters. You can watch it now on Amazon; check out the synopsis and trailer below.
