James Wan Finally Sets the Record Straight on HOME ALONE/SAW Fan Theory

It’s one of the most popular and enduring (albeit unlikely) horror movie fan theory to make the rounds in the Internet Era. I’m talking about those who staunchly maintain that mischievous imp Kevin from Home Alone (played by Macaulay Culkin) grew up to be the infamous serial killer John Kramer, aka the Jigsaw Killer, from James Wan’s Saw franchise.

The clues are all right there, proponents of the theory claim: The traps, the outlaw justice—not to mention the long-lasting psychological trauma he must have suffered after being forgotten by his parents and left to fend for himself! Yup, it’s not a stretch to imagine young Kevin growing up into a serial killer with a knack for contraptions.

Of course, the connection only exists in the minds of cinephiles, those of us who love to imagine these stories and characters have lives beyond the end credits. It’s fun. But as for whether or not Wan intended Jigsaw to represent a grown-up version of the Home Alone star, we’ll that’s another story.

Still, Wan took time to address the much-circulated fan theory during a recent interview with The Huffington Post:

“It’s amazing. I should’ve known all along that Macaulay Culkin would grow up to be John Kramer. I think it’s awesome. I’m very flattered that people take the time to have fun with all these fan theories. I think that’s why I make these movies. I want the fans out there to have fun with them.”

In other words: The theory is as thin as we always knew it was, but at least Wan’s game to play along!
