Rest in Peace: Donald Moffat of THE THING Has Sadly Passed Away

It is with a heavy heart that we report the passing of Donald Moffat, who has died at the age of 87 after complications related to a recent stroke, according to his daughter (Source).

Originally from the UK, actor has over 120 roles to his name, with roles in both television and film. The above image was from his role as the corrupt President Bennett in the 1994 political thriller Clear and Present Danger. For horror fans, they knew him as General Turnbull in Monster in the Closet and as Dr. Arthur McPherson in the Michael Crichton book-to-film adaptation The Terminal Man.

But where we knew him best was as Garry in John Carpenter’s iconic horror film The Thing. It was in this film that horror fans adopted and adored his brilliant presentation of the line, “I know you gentlemen have been through a lot, but when you find the time, I’d rather not spend the rest of this winter tied to this fucking couch!” For as much anger and fear as he showed, let us not forget the sadness and despair he portrayed after the slaying of the Bennings creature. Moffat as Garry is one of those roles that no one else could’ve done with such care and respect.

We send our deepest condolences to his family in this sad time. Should they read this, we hope they know that they have an entire community mourning with them.

Rest in peace, Mr. Moffat. Thank you for your incredible contributions to the world of cinema over the years. You will be remembered for a long, long time.
