Actress Sarah Butler – star of last year’s Steven R. Monroe-directed feature I Spit on Your Grave – apparently hasn’t lost her taste for the genre, as she’s set to star in the psychological thriller The Stranger Inside along with Estella Warren (2001’s Planet of the Apes) and William Baldwin (Backdraft). Read on for more.
Written, produced (with Michael Aoun and Paul Tilly) and to be directed by Danish filmmaker (and CCO of the Danish production company Drama Deluxe) Adam Neutzsky-Wulff, The Stranger Inside is set to commence shooting this month in Mallorca, Spain. Other locations will include Copenhagen, Denmark and New York, New York, with principal photography running until January 15, 2012. Joining Butler, Warren and Baldwin are Jeffrey Pierce (“Fear Itself”), Kim Bodnia and Katia Winter.
Doing some digging, we unearthed further word on The Stranger Inside within the pages of the Danish travel magazine Copenhagen Exclusive, which stated of the feature, “Drama Deluxe’s upcoming film (The Stranger Inside) is an enthralling story that’s riveting and real. It’s a psychological thriller designed to keep you guessing at every twist and turn on a convoluted emotional rollercoaster ride that’s more akin to having a nightmare than being wide awake.”
As for the narrative, the article revealed, “The plot revolves around a beautiful young actress who has a hard time distinguishing dreams from reality. To help her recover from a traumatic experience, she and her psychiatrist husband vacation on a deserted island in the Mediterranean. Suddenly a young traveler shows up after trying to save her boyfriend from a fatal fall. The jealousy between the two women drives the actress to throw her out, which prompts the traveler to…”
That’s where the Copenhagen Exclusive article trailed off, although this writer can confirm that Warren will play the actress at the center of The Stranger Inside, Baldwin her husband, and Butler the traveler; and from the sound of the narrative, the latter sounds as if she’ll have a chance to inject the proceedings with some of the Machiavellian intensity she did her character in I Spit (post attack).
Chatting exclusively today with Butler, she told us of her character in The Stranger Inside and what drew her to the role.
“The script attracted me,” Butler told Dread. “I read a lot of scripts, and frequently I get halfway through and start wondering what I’m going to make for dinner. This script kept me turning the pages with never-ending twists and turns and unpredictable characters. It’s going to be a crazy ride!”
As for her character, “She was originally named Kris, but after I was cast, the filmmakers changed the character name to Sarah. I was very flattered. Sarah is a young girl who is stranded on a Mediterranean island after her boyfriend dies. Thankfully, she is taken in by an American couple, Robert and Emily More (and) once Sarah settles in, she begins to ride a fine line between appropriate and inappropriate behavior, which prompts Emily to ask her husband to throw the young girl out. What Sarah does after this is the beginning of an erratic story about how far people will go when manipulated.”
