(Spoilers) Video Attempts to Decipher CAM’s Mind-Bending Conclusion

While legions of horror fans (not to mention bestselling horror practitioner Stephen King) have been singing the praises of Cam, directed by Daniel Goldhaber from a script penned by Isa Mazzei, others are less impressed. Count YouTube’s FoundFlix as one of the film’s less enthusiastic critics. While he usually only reviews films he enjoys, he made an exception for Cam when inundated with requests to produce an “Ending Explained” video.

Sometimes, confusing endings work; 2001: A Space Odyssey and Donnie Darko are only two examples of films that were both highly-lauded and nearly-indecipherable. I’ll admit, I was absolutely perplexed by Cam’s conclusion, but it didn’t matter to me. My mind was still swirling with the film’s subtexts and symbology, its twists and its empowered protagonist (Madeline Brewer gave a knock-out performance). The film made my personal list of the Top 10 horror movies screened at Fantastic Fest this year, and perhaps it was this hype that set FoundFlix up for disappointment (by created elevated expectations).

Though underwhelmed, FoundFlix pieces together clues like a cinematic Sherlock Holmes in order to give substance to the elusive entity that haunts Alice (Brewer). Since I didn’t have a problem with the movie’s perplexing ending in the first place, his analysis didn’t really add anything to my overall appreciation of the film. Still, I’ll be pondering the two main questions he poses:
Who was behind the A.I. that tormented Alice, and was it wise for her to start over as a cam girl after besting her doppelganger?
