Cannibal Holocaust, directed by Ruggero Deodato, will always be as infamous as it is famous. While many will hail it as the paradigm of a marginalized subgenre, a pioneer of found footage, and an important relic of a bygone era, others have added the film to their personal blacklists for its onscreen killing of animals. Still, Cannibal Holocaust’s controversial nature somehow makes it a source of intense interest—making the film a perfect subject for a documentary!
Our friends at Rue Morgue just got the exclusive on Searching for Cannibal Holocaust, a documentary that will separate fact from fiction with a deep dive into one of cinema’s most vilified offerings. Michael Gingold reports:
Calum Waddell, who has created numerous docs and disc featurettes through his High Rising Productions, is putting together SEARCHING FOR CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST, which examines the film’s complicated history and revisits its star and locations. Its central thesis stems from negative comments Waddell once posted online about the movie, which he has nonetheless been unable to shake off.
“Basically, it is the story of how CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST has impacted upon the lives of a number of people, including myself,” Waddell tells RUE MORGUE.
