Despite being asked to sign nondisclosure agreements, it’s becoming more and more common for test-screeners of upcoming films to leak their reactions. As always, I’d be remiss if I didn’t put the nature of test-screenings into proper context: Text-screening are a common part of the post-production filmmaking process, and producers usually screen intentionally unfinished cuts. It’s a way to gauge what’s working and what isn’t, giving producers time for fine-tuning—or major overhauls.
That said, the reactions to the test-screenings of 2019’s Hellboy are, at least, cause for concern. Give the video recap from Mr. H a spin below for all the details. If you can’t stream, here’s the bottom line in a nutshell: David Harbour does an adequate job as the titular Hellboy, but the script and the main villain are underwhelming.
It’s also worth noting that, despite releasing a trailer for Hellboy weeks ago at New York Comic-Con, it has yet to be released online. This is another red flag, one that seems to indicate the studio may even be attempting to bury the film. Time will tell.
Hellboy, directed by Neil Marshall, is slated for release on April 12th; in addition to Harbour, the film stars Milla Jovovich, Ian McShane, and Sasha Lane.
