The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1: “Graphic Thrusting” Removed from Sex Scene to Appease US and UK Ratings Boards

What the heck is going on over in the Twilight camp? We’ve gone from a film series about a brooding teenage girl and her vampire escape from reality to a penultimate sequel with a sex scene that needed to be edited down to keep the film from grabbing a rating that would ostracize the majority of its audience. Hang on, Twi-hards! It sounds like it’s getting a little racy over there!
First up is Kristen Stewart speaking with Glamour UK, whom she told that the sex scene she filmed with Robert Pattinson in Breaking Dawn – Part 1 was originally so explicit, it was rated R. “It was so weird, it didn’t even feel like we were doing a Twilight film. I was like, ‘Bella! What are you doing? Wow! What is happening here?!’ It was very surreal. We [originally] got rated R [by the MPAA]. They re-cut it.”
Next is this from the British Board of Film Classification: This film was originally shown to the BBFC in an unfinished version. The BBFC advised the company that the film was likely to receive a ’15’ classification but that the requested ’12A’ certificate could be achieved by making changes to a sex scene between the Edward and Bella characters. In particular the BBFC suggested that more graphic sight of Edward thrusting while he lies on top of Bella, and while her legs are wrapped around his torso, be removed. When the finished version of the film was submitted, these changes had been made, with the scene having been reduced in length and with less focus on full body shots. As a result, the film was classified ’12A’.
And here we thought David Slade was going to be the director who pushed the envelope. Way to go, Bill Condon!
Don’t worry, folks. We’re pretty sure that by the time it gets to American Blu-ray/DVD, all the scenes will be back right where you want them. Believe me… I know from experience as Mrs. Gash is a Twi-hard… If the fans can get their hands on a scene with Edward “thrusting” into anything (Bella, a catcher’s mitt, Jell-O mold), they’re going to take it! The Twi-hards want all the Edward thrusting they can get!
Part 1 of Breaking Dawn is slated to be released in theatres on November 18, 2011. Part 2 will follow a year later on November 16, 2012.
