7:00pm – Queer Fear
Horror films, TV shows, books, and comics have always attempted to bring people to the threshold of their fears and force them to come face-to-face with the “otherness” that exists outside of the mainstream. For those in the LGBTQ+ community, this sense of otherness is not only terrifying and titillating, it’s quite often also relatable. The LGBTQ+ community has had a long history of intersection with the horror genre-from the Gothic literature of the yesteryear to the modern cinema of today. As films, television, comics, and other popular media become more diverse, does a gay horror genre exist? And if so, what makes it different from mainstream horror? How does the current political climate alter the lens through which people celebrate and connect to the macabre? Prism Comics and moderator/screenwriter Michael Varrati (Tales of Poe, host of Dead for Filth) and panelists John C. Clark (A Closer Walk with Thee), Erlingur Óttar Thoroddsen (Rift, Child Eater), Brie Williams (A Closer Walk with Thee, Welcome to Night Vale), and others explore horror from a queer point of view.

OFFSITE EXHIBITS (NO BADGE REQUIRED)

FXhibition
Brings the FX network’s buzziest and most beloved shows to life through an interactive combination of art and technology. Taking center stage once again on the lawn of the Hilton San Diego Bayfront Hotel, FXhibition 2018 will incorporate Near Field Communication (NFC) technology for the first time as part of innovative installations from hit shows such as Legion, American Horror Story, Mayans M.C., and Archer. Fans may register in advance at FXSDCC.com and use NFC on-site to record each moment of their personalized journey through the space, which will be captured in a virtual online gallery. FXhibition will be open to the public as follows: Thursday 12noon-6pm; Friday-Saturday 10am-6pm; Sunday 10am-2pm

FX’s recent Los Angeles-based pop-up “The LEGION Chamber” art installation will make its Comic-Con debut, allowing cosplayers the thrilling opportunity to immerse themselves in an audiovisual experience commissioned by the internationally-acclaimed Marco Brambilla Studio. Once inside, participants will find themselves disconnected from the outside world – literally – and fully entrenched in the hypnotic digital realm of David Haller.

Fans will also have the opportunity to step inside the “AMERICAN HORROR STORY Eccentricities Gallery,” featuring a collection of art and oddities inspired by AHS lore. The experience is aided by Augmented Reality (AR) technology, which reveals the secrets behind the objects and clues to the series’ upcoming eighth installment.

Nerdist House @ Sparks Gallery
Nerdist is heading back to San Diego Comic-Con International with a special SDCC edition of Nerdist House from Thursday, July 19th, through Sunday, July 22nd.  All four days of Comic-Con, Nerdist will take over the Sparks Gallery at 530 Sixth Avenue for all-day entertainment and refreshments, special social hours and fan parties, live Nerdist shows, in-depth interviews and conversations, meet & greets, exclusive merchandise, photo opportunities, a VR experience, and much more. Nerdist House will be open to the public and free of charge. Comic-Con attendees are welcome, but a badge is not required.

This year, Nerdist House highlights will include in-depth looks at shows featured on Nerdist, Geek & Sundry, and Alpha (the premium streaming entertainment service from Legendary Digital Networks), as well as up-close and personal conversations with honored guests, all live from the Nerdist stage. Fans will see their favorite shows come to life in Downtown San Diego, including live editions of Nerdist News Talks Back, Talkin’ Toons, Because Science, and more. Nerdist House attendees will have access to conversations with groundbreaking producer and YouTube personality Adi Shankar of Bootleg Universe, as well as a special presentation of the Maltin On Movies podcast with hosts Leonard Maltin and Jessie Maltin alongside their guests from Cut Throat City, RZA, Shameik Moore, Kat Graham, and Terrence Howard.

In addition to live shows and conversations with creators, Nerdist House attendees will be able to test their space survival skills with a VR experience based on the sci-fi series SONA, created by Ashley Clements (The Lizzie Bennet Diaries). On Saturday night, Nerdist will also celebrate the 200th episode of the Bizarre States podcast with a party for fans, hosted by the show’s stars, Jessica Chobot and Andrew Bowser. Each day will feature a new slate of entertainment and activities. Fans will not want to miss the action and fun at Nerdist House!

USA Network’s Purge City Emporium
On Thursday, July 19th, USA will open the doors of America’s first “Purge City” store, an immersive experience in the heart of San Diego’s Gaslamp District, to the public. Transporting fans into the world of THE PURGE, “Purge City” is a tongue-in-cheek, one-stop shop for the perfect Purge Night, where friendly “Purge City” staff help visitors browse the aisles for items from emergency candles to masks to energy drinks—to help citizens stay safe and awake for the 12 hours of annual lawlessness.

Shoppers can also enjoy Purge photo opportunities and browse an area dedicated to the political rise of the New Founding Fathers of America, from the first Purge experiment on Staten Island to subsequent annual Purge Nights. “Purge City” will be open for business at 215 Tony Gwynn Drive — from Thursday, July 19th, through Saturday, July 21st, from 11 AM until 7 PM and Sunday, July 22nd, from 11 AM until 4 PM.

Hulu’s Castle Rock B&B

Open Thursday, July 19th–Sunday, July 22nd, at the intersection of Front Street and Island Avenue, visitors will be able to tour the town of Castle Rock‘s bed and breakfast, explore its vast forest, and more — with “surprises around every corner.” The multi-room experience will help you unlock the secrets of the “unluckiest town on earth” ahead of the series debut. For those not familiar with Castle Rock, the JJ Abrams-produced series will cover the beloved stories from King’s massive canon of work, starring André Holland, Bill Skarsgård, Melanie Lynskey, Scott Glenn, Sissy Spacek, Jane Levy, Terry O’Quinn, and more.

Looking for a quieter place during Comic-Con? Be sure to check out the Hulu Campsite Lounge within the Castle Rock activation, which will serve as a refuge from the chaos of Comic-Con and also give you a sneak peek at the upcoming series.

Sacred Lies Escape Room
Sacred Lies, a new half-hour drama coming to Facebook Watch on July 27the, will have an Escape Room at the convention. In the series, Minnow Bly has survived the woods, a brutal cult leader, and a deadly fire. Now, you can put yourself in the action with the Sacred Lies Escape Room at San Diego Comic-Con on Thursday, July 19th–Sunday, July 22nd. The escape room will essentially be the series in reverse, as you get sucked into Minnow’s world and the Kevinian cult. You’ll solve puzzles, go deep into the cult’s dogma, and — if successful — complete the confirmation ritual and bcome a member of The Community.

Before and after your Escape Room experience, you’ll explore the world of Sacred Lies in an exclusive Oculus Go VR experience. The event will take place at Petco Park.

AMC’s Dead Quarters
Fans of The Walking Dead and Fear The Walking Dead can get excited about the return of Dead Quarters, AMC’s zombie fan zone located on Martin Luther King Promenade, in front of the Hilton Gaslamp Hotel (4th Avenue and L Street, across from the convention center). There will also be photo opportunities with the walker composter and Negan’s flaming Lucille.
