Did J.J. Abrams Just Tease a Possible Cloverfield Crossover Film?

Just this past weekend we were hit with the surprise Netflix release of the third entry in the Cloverfield franchise.

And while The Cloverfield Paradox (review) might not be the shining example of the sturdy sci-fi series, a misstep (however slight) is inevitable so we say, “No harm, no foul.”

But what’s in store for the future of the Cloverfield universe? Other than, you know, the upcoming Cloverfield 4 aka Overlord?

Well, producer extraordinaire J.J. Abrams recently held a Facebook Live Q&A and answered just that. Kinda. Below is his response to the possibility of a Cloverfield Crossover Film.

“We’ve talked about versions of things,” Abrams said. “Like when we did 10 Cloverfield Lane, we were thinking Michelle – the character Mary Elizabeth Winstead plays – it’s such a sort of weird origin story of this kind of incredibly, I think, awesome heroine, that idea of following her story is really cool. And then at one point, we were like, ‘You know what would be really cool? What if they crossed paths with Gugu [Mbatha-Raw]’s character Ava?’ You start to think of ‘what ifs.’ And I think the bigger ideas that we’ve had about where this thing goes haven’t necessarily been those ideas, but they’ve kind of been fun theoretical offshoots.”

I don’t know how much the Cloverfield films need to crossover (more than they have, of course) but I’ll totally take more Mary Elizabeth Winstead!

What do you make of Abrams’ comments? Would you be down for a Cloverfield crossover flick? Let us know below!

The Cloverfield Paradox is currently streaming on Netflix.

Synopsis:

The story, set in the near future, centers on a team of astronauts on a space station making a terrifying discovery that challenges all they know about the fabric of reality, as they desperately fight for their survival.
