Event Coverage – Dark Side DarkFest 2017

Part film festival, part convention, and all horror, the first annual Dark Side DarkFest event was the place you would want to be if you’re as crazy about the genre as we are.

On the film festival side of things, there were screenings of Horror Express, Lady Frankenstein, Night of the Demon, and the 4K restoration of Dario Argento’s 1977 classic, Suspiria. All screenings took place inside the Genesis Cinema’s gigantic 500 seat seat upstairs screen, so it was truly remarkable to finally see such classic films as they were truly meant to be experienced.

In addition to the features, a number of shorts were also screened at Darkest. These included the second public screening of Emma Dark’s Salient Minus Ten (review) after it played at the British Horror Film Festival, Elizabeth Dean’s Creak, and a documentary from Dark Side’s editor about Oakley Court, the filming location of several classic Hammer movies.

On the convention side of the event, which happened in the lobby just outside the screen, a number of celebrity guests had set up shop. They included Dracula AD 1972’s Caroline Munro, Thunderball’s Martine Beswick, and Live and Let Die’s Madeline Smith. I was also delighted to once again meetup with Satan’s Slave Norman J. Warren and my good friend Graham Humphreys, the artist behind the original UK posters for Evil Dead and A Nightmare on Elm Street. Both of them were attending as guests and thoroughly enjoyed themselves.

All in all, this was a great event for horror fans to meet, chat, and enjoy some of their favorite movies on the big screen. I can’t wait to see what DarkFest holds in store for next year.
