A few months back during the SxSW Film Festival in Austin, there was one movie that seemed to be on everyone’s radar: the “inner city versus outer space” epic Attack the Block. Since then the online hype surrounding it has grown to a fever pitch (deservedly so), and thanks to the good people at Screen Gems, Attack the Block is finally going to be hitting theaters everywhere later this month on July 29th.
Last weekend Dread Central had the opportunity to sit down and chat with Attack the Block writer/director Joe Cornish to discuss how he approached making his gritty alien invasion flick with a cast of relative unknowns (Nick Frost being the exception), what went into the mind-blowing creature design of the aliens and the importance of practical effects as well as the challenges he faced as a storyteller needing to keep audiences engaged with the rag-tag group of teenage gang members who turn out to be the only hope for their ‘block’ against the invading aliens.
