So Universal planned a sequel to The Wolfman until the expensive remake didn’t exactly light the world on fire. Then word came that the sequel script was being reworked into a stand-alone movie tentatively titled Werewolf. Now we know who will step in for Joe Johnston for this non-sequel sorta reboot.

Moviehole today brings us the exclusive news that Universal Home Entertainment has hired Louis Morneau to direct Werewolf. Morneau is no stranger to directing direct-to-DVD sequels (even if this one is not technically a sequel anymore): Joy Ride 2: Dead Ahead, The Hitcher II: I’ve Been Waiting, and Carnosaur 2. He also directed the theatrically released guano Bats, but let’s not dwell on that one.

I think it’s safe to say Werewolf is going to be a direct-to-DVD release. I’d be willing to bet $5 Michael Tabb’s Wolfman sequel script has been rewritten to something set in modern times. The thing I’m most curious about is whether they cast adults or decide to skewer younger and take direct aim at the Twilight demographic.

Expect to hear casting news soon.
