The good news for Priest is that it was not a total flop at the box office this weekend. The bad news for Priest is that it still opened soft, and given the word of mouth being less than stellar, odds are once the new Pirates of the Caribbean opens next week, it will quickly fade into the obscurity where botched comic book movies dwell.

Box Office Mojo reports that the quasi-religious, post-apocalyptic, vampire-hunting, kung fu, steampunk, pseudo-western, comic book flick Priest (that’s a lot of adjectives!) opened in 2,864 theaters this past weekend for a $14,500,000 take. That doesn’t sound too bad until you consider a lot of that can be attributed to inflated 3D ticket prices. Sony expects that the movie loosely based – as in almost an entirely different entity from its source material – on a popular Korean graphic novel series created by Min-Woo Hyung published in the US by TokyoPop will make most of its money internationally.

Except for Super 8 in June, that pretty much does it for wide release horror movies until about August. It’s basically an endless supply of sequels, superheroes, animated movies, and comedies until then. If you need a horror fix and haven’t rented Troll Hunter on demand yet, what are you waiting for?
