Remembering George A. Romero by Robert Hall

Dawn of the Dead was the first film I ever saw at a drive-in in Detroit. It scared and titillated me in equal parts. That film, and later Romero’s entire filmography, had a linear and profound effect on me as a director and pushed me as an FX artist.

He wasn’t just making dead movies, he was holding a mirror up to all of our lives and asking important questions.

From the hottest show on TV right now to the best horror comedy of all time (Shawn of the Dead), the genre as we know it wouldn’t exist without Romero’s indelible influence.
