Remembering George A. Romero by Gary Klar

I really believe we should just celebrate George’s life and what he gave to the world. It’s very simple to me… he’s iconic. There were zombie movies made in the Thirties, White Zombie, but he’s the one that really took it into the next realm. He’s the godfather of the genre; he is and always will be. And anything that comes after him is the next step… everything evolves.

I was fortunate; I made a living at acting; a lot of people don’t… and sure, you make friends while you’re making a film, but after working with George, we’ve become like family. If you work with George, you get to know the people behind the scenes, the crew, you become friends with the cast. For me it’s been like its own little family… I’ve never experienced that with anything else I’ve done. Everybody cares, which most people don’t; usually you just move on to the next project. It’s very special… very, very special.

We will miss him…  he’ll be missed, but we need to celebrate his life, his work. I think that’s what he would want.

Even though he wasn’t a native son of Pittsburgh, he certainly helped put Pittsburgh on the map, and hopefully the city will honor George… He did a lot for the city. I don’t know how… maybe a George Romero Day!
