The wonders of Fantasia 2017 are fast approaching, and right now we have the artwork premiere for the Spanish horror-comedy The Night of the Virgin (La Noche del Virgen). The film has its Canadian Premiere at Fantasia on July 22nd.

Synopsis:
It’s New Year’s Eve, and Nico the virgin is out on one of his desperate hunts for sexual relief. From one failed approach to the next, his gawky moves sentence him to yet another night of solitude. Then Medea appears through the dancing crowd, a mythical vision of red braids and emerald glitter. The mesmerizing cougar has locked her sights on our naïve dork and lures him into her forsaken den. The first time is often clumsy and awkward, but for Nico it’s the beginning of an endless nightmare.

It is with undeniable talent that filmmaker Roberto San Sebastián has popped his first-feature cherry. From a simple vaudevillian farce set-up, this insane romantic comedy navigates through hilarious heights and terrific gross-out scenes where the eruption of every bodily fluid imaginable never stops. Guillermo Guerrero’s script cleverly twists the fates of its archetypal characters, embodied by Miriam Martín, goddess of grace and fury, and her co-star Javier Bódalo, whose body language is as skillful as a slapstick comedian of the Golden Age.

The filth of John Waters, the body horror of David Cronenberg, and the wackiness of Lloyd Kaufman – Roberto San Sebastián, rightful heir to all three masters, delivers a personal and inimitable cinematic work. Extreme, graphic, yet never vulgar, with more gore than EVIL DEAD and BRAINDEAD combined, THE NIGHT OF THE VIRGIN is above all a feminist tale of motherhood, ancient rituals, and cockroaches. An unmissable rollercoaster of blood and lust, it will leave you wondering what this bunch of demented Spaniards will deliver next.
