According the the box art for the upcoming Batman and Harley Quinn movie (as revealed by Amazon), the next animated film to feature the Caped Crusader will be none other than an adaptation of Gotham by Gaslight by Brian Augustyn and Mike Mignola. This was fist reported by Comic Book.com, and although nothing is officially confirmed as of yet, it looks like this should be filed under the ‘true’ category for now.

Often considered to be the first non-canon Elseworlds Batman story, Gotham by Gaslight was published in 1989 and featured a version of the Dark Knight hunting Jack the Ripper through Victorian London. There was an attempt to turn it into a video game several years ago, although it ultimately fell through. Like The Killing Joke and Justice League Dark, it seems likely that the Gotham by Gaslight movie will carry an R-rating, and it deserves nothing less. We’ll potentially hear more about it at SDCC later this month.
