Max Landis Talks An American Werewolf in London Effects – Practical, CG, or Both?

We haven’t heard much regarding the upcoming remake of the John Landis classic An American Werewolf in London, but that changed recently as filmmaker (and son of John) Max Landis recently appeared on R.A.: The Rugged Man podcast to discuss one of the most important parts of the film… its effects work.

“The Walking Dead’s” David Alpert and Robert Kirkman are producing an AWIL remake through their Skybound Entertainment for Universal Pictures. The script is indeed being written by Max Landis, who is also attached to direct with his deal currently being negotiated.  Also producing will be Todd Garner and Matt Smith, and John Landis will executive produce.

The thing I would do with CGI,” Landis explained, “were I directing this film, would be leg movement, and I would have the entire wolf’s face, back, and body be practical, and then I would fully CGI the legs for organic movements. If you remake American Werewolf and the transformation scene isn’t practical, you have fucked up.

A year has gone by since the news first broke. Is this movie happening? Will it ever happen. Landis seems optimistic.

We’ll see if I can do it. We’ll see if I can pull it off. We’ll see if they even make it. My goal is… I feel like all of the best remakes focus on one thing in the original movie, take a lot of the images of the original, and then remix that really tightly. With American Werewolf I’m doing that, but I’m also just gonna try and do American Werewolf as best I can. We’ll see. I can’t make no promises.

Check out the whole interview below. Stay tuned for more as it comes.
