In a departure from my long-standing and hopefully generally objective approach to genre journalism, in regard to this past weekend’s Monsterpalooza 3 (see our extensive photo gallery below), I’d like to comment, “OMFG this show is the most fucking amazing horror convention anyone has ever attended!

Orchestrated by Eliot Brodsky, LA’s premier horror convention Monsterpalooza ran April 8-10 at the Marriott Burbank Convention Center in Burbank, California, and, given the word of mouth generated by last year’s fantastic show, continued to increase its horrific momentum. The annual celebration of make-up effects again featured its fan-favorite monster museum, which showcased the practical works of dozens of fx artists, as well as a packed and extensive dealer room, in-depth makeup demonstrations, appearances by myriad notable artists (including Glenn Hetrick, Mike Hill, Jeff Yagher, David Whitford, The Chiodo Brothers, John Goodwin, Mike Westmore and dozens more) and the inclusion of genre filmmakers and actors Joe Dante (The Howling), Dee Wallace, Robert Picardo, Malcolm McDowell (Cat People), Natassia Kinski, Julie Adams (Creature from the Black Lagoon) and Ricou Browning, just to name a few.

Spotted among the hundreds of avid monster fans, creators and journalists who flocked to the event (Monsterpalooza reached capacity in the early afternoon on its second day) were genre vets Rick Baker, Guillermo del Toro, Greg Nicotero, J.J. Abrams, Jeremy Kasten and Jon Favreau, among others, with the convention dedicated to the memory of co-owner of Don Post Studios, Verne Langdon (1941-2011).

In addition, Monsterpalooza 3 also served to honor eighty-two-year-old monster suit actor and stuntman Hiruo Nakajima, who portrayed Godzilla in the original 1954 film as well as in the following eleven consecutive ‘Big G’ flicks.

For genre fans Monsterpalooza has quickly become the benchmark in West Coast horror conventions, and in eschewing the tone of studio product placement demonstrated by its erstwhile competition, it serves each year to remind genre enthusiasts of the primary reasons for their adoration of horror: the creatures themselves and the people who love and make them.
