Universal Could Be in Trouble Over the Dark Universe Umbrella Title; The Rock Eyed For Wolfman

Well, that didn’t take long. A bit more than a week after Universal announced its strategy for a “Dark Universe,” it’s been revealed by THR that Warner Bros., which is already hard at work on a Justice League film titled Dark Universe, is pondering whether or not to pursue legal action.

In my opinion, I see movies with the same name come out all the time. Hell, the prequel to John Carpenter’s The Thing was called The Thing! The Ghostbusters remake was called Ghostbusters. It’s almost like Hollywood has some sort of strange fear against subtitles. But in this case, Dark Universe is a film while “Dark Universe” is a cinematic universe. They’re clearly defined and different properties, so I don’t think there’s any way people are going to get confused. After all, The Mummy isn’t called Dark Universe: The Mummy. I think this is one potential legal battle that would be an ultimately pointless waste of time, resources, and money.

So, on to different news within the “Dark Universe” cinematic universe… it seems that Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is being eyed for the title role of The Wolfman. If he accepts the part, he’ll have played in two Universal Monster movies, the first being 2001’s The Mummy Returns as well as its 2002 spinoff The Scorpion King.

However, this is only in the rumor stage and the next film in the cinematic universe is Bill Condon’s Bride of Frankenstein, which bows in February of 2019. So it seems like there’s a fair bit of time before any decisions will be made.
