What if Horror Authors Covered Books the Way Musicians Covered Songs?

One of the more common phenomena that we see in the music world is when an artist covers a previously recorded song and tries to make it his/her own. Marilyn Manson did it with The Eurythmics’ “Sweet Dreams,” Rammstein did it to Depeche Mode’s “Stripped,” Jimi Hendrix covered Bob Dylan’s “All Along the Watchtower,” etc.

In fact, there are some covers that many could rightfully argue are better than the original or at least more memorable. Nine Inch Nails’ “Hurt” is a brilliant song, but Johnny Cash’s take on it is something out of this world, at least in my opinion.

But what if authors took the same concept and rewrote famous stories using their own voice? That was the subject of a recent Reddit thread, and it yielded some truly amazing results, many of which come from a horror perspective. For example, Redditor SchlitzGivesMeShitz (nice name) suggested, “Clive Barker covering The Ender’s Game with his own fantasy elements and deep elaborations thrown in.

While that one gives a great foundation, some users decided to take their ideas to the next level and give an example of such a “cover.” Below are several examples, each as imaginative and interesting as any other!

After you read these, why not give it a shot and do one of your own in the comments below? Bonus points to anyone who uses Dante Alighieri’s Divine Paradise rhyming scheme to rewrite Clive Barker!
