Mythology Turns Hardcore in Gruesome Finnish Troll Movie Backwood Madness

Before it became synonymous with assholes on the internet, the word ‘troll’ actually had significant meaning as the name for the meanest, ugliest creatures in Norse folklore. Just look at the trailer and posters for the upcoming Finnish movie Backwood Madness to see how nasty they can be.

Set during World War II, the trolls and goblins of Backwood Madness have finally decided to reclaim the forest for themselves after growing tired of man stepping foot within their territory. The trolls here appear to be human-sized, as opposed to the Kaiju-like creatures in the 2010 Norwegian classic Trollhunter. Backwood Madness also appears to be going a much darker and more horrific route.

Directed by accomplished makeup artist Ari Savonen, Backwood Madness stars Toni Kandelin, Jukka Hautajärvi, Niina Ylipahkala, Jari Manninen, Roope Olenius, and Aleksanteri Jaakkola. It will be released in Finland later this year, and given the popularity of Scandinavian movies oversees, we shouldn’t have to wait to long for an international release. I’m also betting that there’s gonna be an inevitable remake too.
