Yesterday brought the sad news that John Warren Geils, Jr. (professionally known as J. Geils), the guitarist and leader of The J. Geils Band, was found dead at his home in Groton, Massachusetts. In a statement made by police, they said, “…a preliminary investigation indicates that Geils died of natural causes.

While The J. Geils Band is most well known for their 1981 single “Centerfold,” the horror community will know of them for recording the theme song to the 1985 vampire horror/comedy Fright Night. The band disbanded shortly after the soundtrack contribution and never came back together to record new material, although they did reunite occasionally for live shows. They were nominated for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame for the fourth time last fall but again were not selected as part of the 2017 class.

We send our condolences to Geils’ friends, family members, and fans. Rest in peace, Mr. Geils. Thanks for all the music over the years.
