DVD and Blu-ray Releases: March 21, 2017

Spring is in the air, folks. That is, unless you live in New England. Then you don’t really care about the air because you’re just trying to get back indoors. But, if you are stuck indoors, at least you can pick up one of this week’s 17 releases to keep you occupied.
We’ve got a good handful of classics this week. Reaching back more than 70 years, we’ve got Blu-ray releases for 1940’s Chamber Of Horrors, 1945’s A Game Of Death and 1941’s Invisible Ghost. Up next, for our John Waters fans, 1970’s Multiple Maniacs. Rounding out our selection of classics this week is 1989’s Dead Calm, featuring a young Nicole Kidman, Billy Zane and Sam Neill – because that movie came out 28 years ago.
Coming out of Australia is the first season of “Wolf Creek.” I liked the original movie, so I may have to check this one out myself.

Cannibal Messiah (2016)

Cannibal Messiah follows the journey of documentary film makers, Crippler Criss and Master W of P.S.Y.C.H.O Productions and The Pathfinder, a man with a revenge mission against a cannibal cult in the woods of Germany. Things go wrong quickly as Master W turns against his companions and ends up amongst the cannibals. Will Master W and Crippler Criss eventually make it out of those woods? Will the Pathfinder get his revenge? And what is the deal with the mysterious videotapes that a mystery figure keeps delivering to them, tapes that give them horrible insights into their own futures? You’ll have to watch to find out… but bring a raincoat, as blood, guts and gore will fly like you’ve never witnessed before!

Chamber of Horrors (1940)

Chamber of Horrors was based on the classic novel, The Door with Seven Locks by Edgar Wallace (King Kong, The Terror) – it was the second Wallace adaptation brought to the States by Monogram Pictures. Dr. Manetta (Leslie Banks, The Most Dangerous Game) holds one of the seven keys that will open the crypt of Lord Selford, who was entombed with a fortune in jewels. Before long, the other six key holders start turning up dead… is the doctor the killer or just the next victim? Chamber of Horrors drips with atmosphere, adding all the classic The Old Dark House trappings fog, chambers, corridors, rats, coffins and more. Norman Lee (The Monkey s Paw) directed this old-fashioned murder mystery co-starring the beautiful Lilli Palmer (The House That Screamed).

Dead Calm (1989)

A Game of Death is a thrilling adventure yarn, which was beautifully shot in glorious black-and-white by the great J. Roy Hunt (I Walked with a Zombie, Crossfire) and also featured wonderful performances by Audrey Long (Born to Kill, Desperate) and Robert Clarke (The Man From Planet X, The Hideous Sun Demon).
Invisible Ghost (1941)

Synopsis:
Newly Mastered in HD! The great Joseph H. Lewis (Gun Crazy, My Name is Julia Ross) directed this classic Monogram horror film about a man who unknowingly carries out a series of grisly murders while under the power of his insane and domineering wife (Betty Compson, The Docks of New York). Horror legend Bela Lugosi (Dracula, Chandu the Magician) stars in this dark Jekyll & Hyde tale as a kindly doctor whose thought-to-be-dead wife hypnotizes him, turning him into an unwitting homicidal killer. This was the first and the best of nine Monogram Pictures made by producer Sam Katzman (Earth vs. the Flying Saucers, It Came from Beneath the Sea) co-starring Polly Ann Young (The Man From Utah) and Clarence Muse (The Black Stallion).
