Horror Box Office – OPENING THIS WEEK: February 10, 2017

There are no big studio horror releases this week, but at least Split is riding high! As for Rings and Resident Evil: The Final Chapter, our best advice? If you do want to see them in a theater, you’d better get your asses there because we doubt they will be playing much longer.

That being said… NEW this week on VOD and in limited theatrical release are the following… Be sure to check your local listings. Click on each title for specifics, and check back every Thursday!

Don’t Hang Up
An evening of drunken prank calls becomes a nightmare for a pair of teenagers when a mysterious stranger turns their own game against them.

Havenhurst
Jackie (Julie Benz), a troubled young woman with an unyielding alcohol addiction, is released from rehab and given a second chance with a new job and a furnished apartment at Havenhurst. Guilt-ridden over the tragic loss of her 8-year-old daughter, Jackie is quickly drawn into the mysteries of Havenhurst, in particular the unsolved disappearance of the apartment’s previous occupant, a young woman (Danielle Harris) she befriended in rehab who disappeared recently without a trace.

Aided by a hardened New York police detective (Josh Stamberg) and a lonely foster child (Belle Shouse) who lives under the shadow of her caretakers’ sadistic whims, Jackie must not only battle her inner demons… but the very real ones that live deep within the walls of Havenhurst.

The 9th Life of Louis Drax (available on MOD as of 2/7/17)
The 9th Life of Louis Drax begins on Louis Drax’s 9th birthday, when he miraculously survives a near fatal fall. His doctor, Allan Pascal (Jamie Dornan), finds himself tangled between his professional responsibility and his growing affections for the boy’s mother (Sarah Gadon), a fragile young beauty. When Louis’ father (Aaron Paul) comes under suspicion, Pascal realizes other mysterious forces may be at work.

Still Playing in Limited Release and on VOD:

The Lure
In a visceral twist on Hans Christian Andersen’s original Little Mermaid tale, one sister falls for a human; and as the bonds of sisterhood are tested, the lines between love and survival get blurred. A savage coming-of-age fairytale with a catchy new-wave soundtrack, lavishly grimy sets, and outrageous musical numbers, THE LURE explores its themes of sexuality, exploitation, and the compromises of adulthood with energy and originality.

Don’t Knock Twice
“Knock once to wake her from her bed, twice to raise her from the dead…” So goes a disturbing urban legend involving an abandoned house supposedly inhabited by a vengeful, child-stealing witch.

When troubled teen Chloe (Boynton) raps at the door one night, she has no idea the horror she’s about to unleash. Fleeing to the country home of her estranged mother (Sackhoff)—a recovering addict who’s turned her life around to become a famous artist—Chloe must learn to trust the woman who gave her up years ago in order to stop the bloodthirsty, shape-shifting demon stalking them. This wild supernatural shocker delivers a barrage of nonstop jolts and searing nightmare images.

Eloise
Four friends break into the abandoned institution in hopes of finding a death certificate, which will provide Jacob with the rights to a sizable inheritance. While inside the asylum, the group not only finds that the institution houses a horrifying history but also the truth about their own tragic pasts.

They’re shooting in the Eloise Insane Asylum, which was one of the largest mental institutions in the world. What began as one building in Westland, MI, in 1832 rapidly grew into a 78-building, self-sustained city, complete with its own fire and police departments, train station, post office and farms. Eloise closed its doors in 1982 and has since been dormant and left to ruin.

Journey to the West: The Demons Strike Back
A monk and his disciples travel to the West to exorcise demonic possessions, but first need to understand their own personal anxieties. Now tamed by Tang Sanzang, Monkey King has become one of Tang’s disciples. Tang, Monkey King, Sandy and Pigsy band together to fight demons as they continue their journey west.
