Mutant Football League Promises to be The Wildest, Goriest, Most Outrageous Football Game Ever
Before EA struck gold with their FIFA soccer series, they released a much more oddball, much more unique sports video game in the form of 1993’s Mutant League Football. As its name suggests, it featured mutants in a nightmarish post-apocalyptic version of Earth settle their differences by competing in the sport of American football.
So yeah, with such a weird premise, it was obviously never gonna be a huge hit, although it did get a sequel in the form of Mutant League Hockey. There was even a spinoff animated TV series with (somehow) lasted for two seasons.
24 years after the release of Mutant League Football, we’re getting a spiritual successor by the name of Mutant Football League. What a vastly different title, eh? Anyway, development on Mutant Football League is being led by Michael Mendheim, who also created the original game.
And don’t worry if you suck at sporting video games. If you can’t win the match, you can just kill all the other players, which would make your team win by default. With everything from explosives to chainsaws at your disposal, you can expect to be seeing a whole lot of red on the pitch. No wonder the official Kickstarter campaign calls Mutant Football League the “wildest, goriest, most outrageous football game ever”. They also promise “over the top visual and gore effects” and even have a move known as the “Chainsaw Massacre”. Sounds like our kind of shit.
You may not have heard of the series, but its already raised well over its $60,000 goal. So there are fans out there. Lots of them, it seems. And they’ll all be playing this brutal football game when it launches on PC in October and on PS4 and Xbox One in 2018.
