Bram Stoker’s great-grandnephew Dacre has approved of a new comic called Resurrection of Dracula, which examines how the story would have played out if literature’s most famous vampire was female. It will lead on to a graphic novel titled Anastasia Van Helsing and Dracula. Sink your teeth into the info below.

From the Press Release:
In 2014, an idea was sprung to turn a classic literary character into a new villainess for this generation. Before we begin the story of Dracula (which will take about a year to develop), we have a prequel mini-comic to start. In Resurrection of Dracula, we get the backstory on how Vlada Dracul became the Vampire she is today. It’s a short and to-the-point comic book, complete with character profiles at the end to explore the main characters for the 50-page graphic novel Anastasia Van Helsing and Dracula.

Iseta Solaris (Artist): “It’s taking a novel that originally had a lot of sexist overtones (especially with its view of women and women’s sexuality) and now shifting the narrative with the two primary characters as women. This comic, I hope, will be able to highlight the complexity, depth, and types of strength these two women hold.”

Chris Denmead (Writer): “I think it’s time to do something different with Dracula. We have seen the same aristocratic noble person used the same way over and over again. Changing her sex really will breathe new life into this character.”

Dacre Stoker, the great-grandnephew of Bram Stoker (the creator of Dracula), even supports this project: “I’m happy to see something different done with my uncle’s character and breathing new life into this literary character that I have not seen done before.”
