Originally turned into a movie in 2001 starring Anthony Hopkins and the tragically departed Anton Yelchin, Stephen King’s 1999 book Hearts in Atlantis is getting a second film adaptation, which will be directed by Johannes Roberts and financed by The Fyzz Facility, as reported by Variety.

Roberts helmed this year’s The Other Side of the Door and In the Deep and will write the screenplay for Hearts in Atlantis with his regular writing partner, Ernest Riera. King himself has given the new version his blessing.

The original book consisted of two novellas and three short stories. Unlike the previous film, which adapted the stories “Low Men in Yellow Coats” and “Heavenly Shades of Night Are Falling,” the new adaptation will focus on the titular story, in which a group of broke college freshmen find a mysterious new card game called Hearts begin to take over their lives.

Interestingly, like several of King’s other books, including It, Insomnia, and The Dark Tower series, Hearts in Atlantis formed part of the Stephen King multiverse, in which all the stories share continuity. It even made references to The Dark Tower’s primary antagonist, the Crimson King. Although the films are being distributed by different studios, it would sure be great to see a Stephen King cinematic universe one day.
