Sam Raimi Talks Unused Evil Dead 4 Ideas; Ash vs. Machines?!

The Starz series “Ash vs. Evil Dead” was undoubtedly one of last year’s most awesome things, and we’re happy to report that the first season is now available on both DVD and Blu-ray. The show is essentially an extended fourth installment in the original Evil Dead franchise, but what if we did actually get a true Evil Dead 4?

As scooped by Screen Rant, Sam Raimi talks about Evil Dead 4 on the episode-by-episode commentary tracks available on the groovy new “Ash vs. Evil Dead” home video release, revealing some pretty crazy ideas that almost made their way onto the screen.

Bruce is a documentary filmmaker I remember one of them was, capturing his own journey through life,” Sam Raimi mentions. Brother Ivan Raimi adds: “Bruce travels cross country to sell his documentary in a car to explain the importance of his story being told. No one thought it was a very important story except him.”

Another idea, as Raimi has talked about before, was to merge the two Army of Darkness endings; one, released outside the States, transported Ash to the future, while the other saw him returning to the present day.

So we wrote an Evil Dead 4 that followed both realities,” Raimi noted. “We were going to be following two Bruces – one in the future and simultaneously crosscutting to Bruce here in the present. And we realized, we have really lost our mind now and we must stop.”

Also scrapped, mostly for budgetary reasons, was an epic film that Bruce Campbell refers to as “Ash vs. The Machines.” Essentially, it would’ve taken the Evil Dead franchise into Terminator territory, and it probably would’ve been the coolest and craziest sequel ever.

Could Evil Dead 4 still happen? Never say never, when it comes to this franchise!
