Godzilla Resurgence Debuts at Number One in Japan

The king of the monsters became king of the box office as Godzilla Resurgence debuted at number one in Japan over the weekend, earning an impressive $6,122,434 across 441 screens, as reported by Box Office Mojo. It dethroned current box office heavyweight One Piece Film Gold, which opened on July 23 across 743 screens, making it the widest ever Japanese release.
Including its Friday gross, Resurgence has now earned a total of $8,289,311 in its home country, so despite having a long way to go before it fully recuperates both its production and marketing budgets (Toho spared no expense on marketing the damn thing), it’s already off to a strong start. 2014’s Godzilla movie grossed $29,930,046 in Japan, an amount that Resurgence is well on its way to overtaking.
Godzilla Resurgence stomps into American theaters later this year.
