Twisted Short The Stomach Expands to Feature Size
Back in 2014, director Ben Steiner’s short film The Stomach (review) made quite the impression on the festival circuit — and now we have word that a feature-length return to the film’s grim world could be in the cards very soon.
Steiner and his producer, Dan Dixon — under the banner of FUME Films — will be pitching the feature project at this month’s Frontieres co-production market in Montreal. Here are some early details straight from the mouth of the man himself:
The feature takes the audience into the same unique world as the short (“The Long Good Friday through the lens of Clive Barker,” as one critic memorably put it) but introduces a major new character in the form of a corrupt and sexually deviant police detective. This character has his own shocking reasons for wanting to harness the powers of the spirit medium whose method of channeling the dead gives the short, and now the feature, its name.
We’re currently in serious discussions with French production company Vixens about a possible co-production relationship and have assembled a very talented and experienced core creative team to support me, including a director of photography and editor, both of whose work will be very familiar to genre fans. We also have SFX maestro Dan Martin (High-Rise, Free Fire) returning to reprise his award-winning work on the short.
Here’s hoping that everything falls into place for the project — the unique concept of The Stomach is definitely one worthy of revisiting!
