NBC Keeps it Grimm on Fridays; Goes Timeless on Mondays; and Holds Midnight, Texas and Emerald City for Midseason

Not much is changing on NBC for genre fans this coming 2016-17 season as the network will be keeping its current sole horror show, “Grimm,” right where it is on Friday nights.  Its two newly announced pickups – “Midnight, Texas” and “Emerald City” – are being held for midseason, and the only other newcomer of interest, “Timeless,” a time travel action adventure series from “Supernatural” creator Eric Kripke whose pilot was directed by Neil Marshall, will begin airing this fall on Mondays.

As for “Grimm’s” shortened Season 6 order for just 13 episodes and its constantly shifting air day/timeslot, during a phone conference with press that included Deadline this morning, NBC Entertainment Group chairman Bob Greenblatt said it was a “tough” call. “We continue to try to figure out how to capture audience that night. We’ve done relatively well with ‘Caught on Camera’ into ‘Grimm’ into ‘Dateline.’  We have a couple of shows for midseason in the same supernatural/fantastical sweet spot [like “Emerald City” and “Midnight, Texas”].  We have other things in this genre that we’re excited about that could potentially go into Friday, and we’ll see as the year unfolds,” Greenblatt forecast.

Read on for excerpts from the network’s announcement, a few stills, key art, and even a trailer for “Timeless.”

From NBC’s Press Release:
Riding the momentum of a highly successful 2015-16 season, NBC announced today a new fall lineup for the 2016-17 primetime television season that builds upon a remarkably stable schedule.

“Timeless,” from Eric Kripke (“Revolution”) and Shawn Ryan (“The Shield”), features a scientist, soldier, and history professor who must change the past while trying to capture a dangerous fugitive. It will air Monday nights at 10PM in the coveted post-“The Voice” timeslot.

“Grimm” remains on Friday nights at 9PM.

Midseason dramas include “Emerald City,” a complete reimagination of The Wizard of Oz set in a mystical land of dark magic, lethal warriors, and a bloody battle for supremacy; and “Midnight, Texas,” based on the hit book series from author Charlaine Harris (“True Blood”), about the vampires, witches, psychics, and hit men who inhabit this small town.

“TIMELESS”
From Eric Kripke (“Revolution,” “Supernatural”), Shawn Ryan (“The Shield”), and the producers of “The Blacklist,” comes this thrilling action-adventure series in which a mysterious criminal steals a secret state-of-the-art time machine, intent on destroying America as we know it by changing the past. Our only hope is an unexpected team: a scientist, soldier, and history professor who must use the machine’s prototype to travel back in time to critical events. While they must make every effort not to affect the past themselves, they must also stay one step ahead of this dangerous fugitive. Can this handpicked team uncover the mystery behind it all and end his destruction before it’s too late?

The cast includes Abigail Spencer, Matt Lanter, Malcolm Barrett, Goran Visnjic, Paterson Joseph, Sakina Jaffrey, and Claudia Doumit. Eric Kripke and Shawn Ryan serves as writers and executive producers. John Davis, John Fox, Marney Hochman, and director Neil Marshall also executive produce. “Timeless” is produced by Davis Entertainment, Kripke Enterprises, and MiddKid Productions in association with Sony Pictures Television.

“EMERALD CITY”
In the blink of a tornado’s eye, 20-year-old Dorothy Gale and a K9 police dog are swept into a world far removed from our own — a mystical land of competing realms, lethal warriors, dark magic, and a bloody battle for supremacy. Starring Vincent D’Onofrio (“Daredevil,” Jurassic World) as the guileful Wizard and directed by the visionary Tarsem Singh across three European countries, this is Oz completely reimagined — a place where familiar characters show up in fresh, unexpected ways, and where an unsuspecting young woman holds the fate of kingdoms in her hands. As Dorothy navigates this dangerous world and uncovers her true destiny, we’ll see there’s no place like… Oz.

The cast includes Vincent D’Onofrio, Adria Arjona, Ana Ularu, Oliver Jackson-Cohen, Jordan Loughran, Gerran Howell, Mido Hamada, Joely Richardson, Isabel Lucas, Stefanie Martini, Suan-Li Ong, Florence Kasumba, and Roxy Sternberg. David Schulner and Shaun Cassidy are writers and executive producers.
