high rise - Today on VOD: Harvest Lake and High-Rise

We’ve become pretty accustomed in recent years to new movies hitting VOD outlets on Fridays, though this week is a little bit different. Not one but two new genre movies are now available for instant streaming as we head into the oh-so-glorious weekend, and we’ve got all the information you need. Dig in, fiends!

First up, rampant piracy (sigh) has forced Scott Schirmer to bump up the VOD release of his film Harvest Lake, so instead of it arriving on the planned date of May 7th, it’s available for digital rental over on Vimeo right now. If you want to check it out, be a good fan and pay for it.

Tristan Risk stars alongside Ellie Church, Jason Crowe, Dan Nye, and Kevin Roach, who appeared in the Nightmare on Elm Street fan film, The Confession of Fred Krueger.

Five friends stumble under the spell of a libidinous, otherworldly presence in the woods. Inhibitions drop and behavior becomes erratic as one of the friends tries to escape the carnal free-fall, ultimately bringing him face to face with the source of a mystery that will change his life forever.

Also out today is Ben Wheatley’s hotly-anticipated High-Rise, which Magnolia Pictures invites you to check out before it hits limited theaters on May 13th. The film is an adaptation of J.G. Ballard’s same-named novel, which was once thought to be impossible to adapt. You rule, Mr. Wheatley.

Scripted by Amy Jump, the film stars Tom Hiddleston (The Avengers, Crimson Peak), Jeremy Irons (Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice), Sienna Miller (American Sniper), Luke Evans (Dracula Untold), and Elisabeth Moss (“Mad Men”). It chronicles the savage breakdown of social order inside a giant residential apartment block.

High-Rise stars Hiddleston as Dr. Robert Laing, the newest resident of a luxurious apartment in a high-tech concrete skyscraper whose lofty location places him amongst the upper class. Laing quickly settles into high society life and meets the building’s eccentric tenants: Charlotte (Miller), his upstairs neighbor and bohemian single mother; Wilder (Evans), a charismatic documentarian who lives with his pregnant wife, Helen (Moss); and Mr. Royal (Irons), the enigmatic architect who designed the building. Life seems like paradise to the solitude-seeking Laing. But as power outages become more frequent and building flaws emerge, particularly on the lower floors, the regimented social strata begins to crumble, and the building becomes a battlefield in a literal class war.
